I had the exact same issue as you with deleting and recreating my Google Mail account on my iPad. I solved it by deleting all my email accounts (ONLY 3 and they were IMAP ) and setup my Google Mail account first. That worked and then added back my two other to email accounts after that. Everything was fine once I tried that.
